Description
If a horse already has a DNA profile from another laboratory, you can submit that profile to Animal Genetics instead of retesting the horse. This is most often used for parentage testing, when a foal is tested with us but its sire or dam was profiled elsewhere, as is common with outside stallions.
We accept profiles from laboratories that follow the standards of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) and report genotypes using the international alphanumeric nomenclature, as leading laboratories including the University of California, Davis and the University of Kentucky do. Because these profiles use the same markers and naming, they can be compared directly with profiles produced by Animal Genetics.
Our marker panel
Animal Genetics profiles use a multiplex panel of 20 markers, including the ISAG core microsatellite (STR) markers and the AME sex marker:
AHT4, AHT5, ASB2, ASB17, ASB23, CA425, HMS1, HMS2, HMS3, HMS6, HMS7, HTG4, HTG6, HTG7, HTG10, LEX3, LEX33, UM011, VHL20 and AME.
A parentage comparison can only use the markers that both profiles contain. If an outside profile was run on fewer markers, the comparison is based on the markers the two profiles share. If too few markers overlap for a reliable conclusion, the horse may need to be retested.
Parentage testing
The foal’s profile is compared marker by marker with the profile of each proposed parent. A foal must share one allele with each true parent at every marker, so a mismatch shows that a proposed parent is excluded. Comparing the foal with only the proposed sire can verify the sire. Including the dam’s profile as well gives the most reliable result, because it accounts for the half of the foal’s DNA that did not come from the sire. All conclusions are provided in writing once the comparison is complete.
What you receive
| Service | Result |
|---|---|
| Profile on file | The outside profile is recorded with Animal Genetics and can be used in parentage comparisons without retesting the horse. |
| Parentage | A written conclusion stating whether each proposed parent qualifies (is consistent with being the parent) or is excluded. |
Please include a copy of the original profile report from the other laboratory, showing the laboratory’s name, the horse’s name and identification, and its genotype at each marker. The horses being compared with this profile should be tested with DNA Profiling and Parentage (Equine).
